Early on in the COVID-19 outbreak, China moved quickly to establish itself as a key player helping African governments to mitigate the spread of the virus. China was among the only countries to provide Africa with supplies of badly-needed protective equipment and later vaccines. While it promised to make its vaccines available as a “Global Public Good,” China’s distribution of jabs has been highly unequal in Africa, with the majority going to only a handful of countries.
